auf einmal instrumental. überwiegend ruhige stücke, kaum verzerrung. weitere auflösung der auch vorher schon nicht gerade eindeutigen liedstrukturen. torchous veröffentlichen mit »variations« ihr zweites album, das scheinbar wenig mit dem vorgänger »cut the plans« gemein hat. das mag mutig sein, als einigermaßen unbekannte band, man mag gedankenlosigkeit unterstellen, naivität. möglicherweise auch die berühmte antihaltung oder gleich ganz dick die negierung der gesetze des marktes. vielleicht liegen die beweggründe aber auch ganz woanders.
vielleicht ist es einfach begeisterung für musik, noch dazu für die eigene. der unterschied zum eigentlichen klanggewand ist insofern kein so gravierender, als dass eben diese von vorn bis hinten zu hören ist. sei es nun die wie immer reiche, überbordende harmonik, die ausgeklügelte arbeit mit rhythmus oder die liebe zu den details. an der herangehensweise der band hat sich nichts grundlegend geändert. anders ist vielmehr die umsetzung. möglicherweise durch den gedanken angeregt, dass es immer unerklärlich bleibt, woraus in einem kreativen prozess irgendwann die überzeugung erwächst, etwas abgeschlossen zu haben, dass ein lied immer nur willkürlich ist, wird dieses also wieder auseinander genommen. eine idee, die übrigbleibt, dient als ausgang für einen neuen ansatz. torchous remixen sich selbst, das aber in echtzeit, als kollektiv und ergebnisoffen. das resultat trägt dann auch eher track- als songcharakter und lässt sich mitunter kaum noch mit den ursprünglichen stücken in verbindung stellen, eröffnet dafür aber neue möglichkeiten.
so sind die neue alten stücke alle viel luftiger und verspielter als deren orignale und bieten einen wesentlich einfacheren zugang. der musik ist viel zeit und platz eingeräumt, sich in die eine oder andere richtung zu entwickeln, ohne dem hörer die aufmerksame verfolgung aufzudrängen. sie wirkt weniger kopflastig als noch zuvor, um einiges intuitiver und - man kann es ruhig einmal sagen - deutlich zärtlicher. glücklicherweise ist es der aufnahme gelungen, viel davon einzufangen. die musik ist behutsam und offen gemischt, die lebendigkeit, der raum und vor allem die dynamik erhalten geblieben. ähnlich den aufnahmen klassischer musik sind die leisen passagen wirklich leise, die lauten dafür umso beeindruckender, und es ist, mal umfassender betrachtet, eigentlich ärgerlich, dass diese liebenswerte besonderheit leider eben eine besonderheit ist. und nicht zuletzt ist die musik einfach wunderschön.

Torchous - Variations

all of a sudden it's instrumental. quiet songs prevail. song structures, never having been too explicit in the first place, further dissolve. naming it »variations«, torchous put out a second album that seems to have but little in common with its predecessor, »cut the plans«. this may be an act of courage from a relatively non-famous band, one might regard it as an act of thoughtlessness, naiveté, the renowned anti-posture maybe, or why not assume the conscious negation of market mechanisms? but just maybe the band's motives and motivations stem from something else.
maybe it's just plain enthusiasm for music, one's own music, at that. so in the end, the difference in sound is not that radical inasmuch as this music is heard from teh beginning to the end, be it the rich, . take the rich, exuberant harmonics, the sophisticated rhythm studies, the eagerness to go into detail. the band's approach to making music has not changed fundamentally. it is the way of putting that approach into real sounds and songs that is different. it is doubtful whether we will ever know what produces the feeling of having completed something in a creative process. a song is always an arbitrary result. possibly incited by these assumptions, torchous dismantle and deconstruct their songs. the remaining ideas form the basis for a new departure. torchous are remixing themselves, in real-time, as a collective, open to any conclusions. the results are rather tracks than songs, at times they are virtually impossible to trace back to their origins, but they create new possibilities.
the new old songs are lighter and more playful than the originals, granting easier access. torchous give their music the space and the time it needs to develop and to take different directions. their is no obtrusion towards the listener to attentively follow its movements. the songs focus less on reason and more on intuition and - let's just name it, shan't we - tenderness. fortunately much of this atmosphere has been captured in the recording process. the music has been mastered carefully and lightly, preserving the liveliness, the space and, most importantly, the dynamics. similar to recordings of classical music, the quiet parts are really and truly quiet, the louder sections therefore even more impressive. it is, from a global point of view, quite sad that these special features are so special.
but anyway. last, but not least, this music is simply and stunningly beautiful.

1998 sind torchous aus der berliner independentszene entsprungen. sie spielten in den letzten 5 jahren unzählige konzerte im ganzen land. unter anderem mit bands wie blonde redhead, sensefield, cable car theorie, kevlar, slowride, pale, pleasure forever, sometree, delbo, masonne, seidenmatt u.v.a.
2001 veröffentlichten sie die ep »rock beat break« in eigenregie.

im herbst 2002 produktion des ersten albums »cut the plans« unter regie des berliner produzenten anton k. feist. juli 2003 veröffentlichung auf sinnbus records.
auf diversen samplern vertreten. u.a. auf dem sinnbus transport sampler und der blunoise compilation »the finest noise #10«.

im dezember 2002 haben torchous das erste mal, im rahmen eines ruhigen konzertabends, einige ihrer stücke umgeschrieben und ihnen den titel »variations« verpasst. aus einem projekt wurde ernst und im sommer 2005 nahm man in einer akustisch wertvollen lokalität ein ganzes live-album auf.

in 1998 torchous arose from berlin's independent music scene. in the past five years, they have played countless shows all over the country, supporting and teaming up with bands like blonde redhead, sensefield, cable car theory, kevlar, slowride, pale, pleasure forever, sometree, delbo, masonne and seidenmatt, to name but a few. in 2001 they autonomously released the ep »rock beat break«.

in 2002 the band produce their first album »cut the plans« under the direction of berlin based producer anton k. feist. sinnbus records releases »cut the plans« in july 2003.
a number of compilations feature torchous songs, among them the sinnbus transport sampler and the blunoise-compilation »finest noise #10«.

it was in december 2002, during a quiet concert evening, that torchous presented rewritten versions their songs for the first time. what then was a mere project dubbed »variations« soon took on shape, leading to the recording of a live-album in an acoustically priceless location.
